Without Incident!

Well, my folks set off for home this morning and their visit passed without incident, which isn't always the case! This time we just had a mad rush to find Mother's reading glasses. I think this is a happening for women of a certain age, rather than just my mother, as my ex-husband's mother was exactly the same, and having said that, I once had to 'special delivery' my father's glasses!

Mother is one of those people who is happiest when she's busy. As a result she's been a whirlwind through the house and went through Miss Muffett's bedroom like a dose of salts. I narrowly saved half a dozen bags of 'rubbish' from the wheelie bin to find that the majority of it could go to the charity shop. She's very hot on 'recycling' but sometimes can't see the 're-using' possibilities.

The weather has been pretty awful so we concentrated on family time at home, having fun with Nipper and Miss Muffett who they do'nt get to see very often, and just one foray into town for a bit of a pootle when it stopped raining. We did lots of cooking together and Miss Muffett made a lovely loaf of bread which we had with 'chuck-it-all-in-soup' - this version being potato, leek and watercress. It's basically any veg which you have left over and you think will go well together. Just chop it all up, chuck it in a pan of water (about 1" above the veg) and add a chicken stock-cube. We left it on the hob for a while on a low heat and then blitzed it with the hand blender. I added a couple of spoonfuls of creme fraiche at the end as I happened to have some in the fridge.
Yum Yum!
We're off for a short break tomorrow so I hope the weather gets a bit better!

  1. What, dear Tilly, is "pootle"?

It's nice to have a visit from the folks go off so well. Congratulations!

  2. Wow, it does sound like there was a bit of a whirlwind in your house. I am going to visit my parents on beautiful Vancouver Island in a couple of weeks. I find it better if I go there - when mom comes over she stresses me out - I guess it is what mums do. If I visit, I take her out for coffee and shopping and it's a better time all around - plus she is more comfortable in her own home. Hope you get a chance to relax a bit.

  3. Great-looking soup! I love making soup, especially in the fall and winter. It's good to be "distracted" on those rainy summer days. Here's wishing you sunshine in the near future!

  4. Thought I had better explain the word 'pootle'. I'm not sure if this word is used across England but it's certainly used in my little corner. It means to do something in a leisurely or unhurried kind of way. In our case having a leisurely wander around the shops!
